Gippsland

Alfred Health Radiation Oncology is located at the Latrobe Regional Hospital in Traralgon West. We opened in July 2006 as part of the fully integrated Gippsland Cancer Care Centre, and are linked with Alfred Health Radiation Oncology at The Alfred Hospital. We are the eastern-most radiation therapy department in Victoria and service patients from the NSW border to the Bass coast and Pakenham, treating all adult cancer types.

We provide a free multidisciplinary and evidence based approach to cancer treatment, working closely with surgeons and medical oncologists in the region. All patients are discussed weekly in a joint multidisciplinary meeting to facilitate a co-ordinated care plan.

Over the past 9 years the centre has seen significant growth in both infrastructure and radiation therapy treatments. The centre is fitted with state-of-the-art radiation therapy equipment, including two linear accelerators with MV, kV and Cone-Beam imaging. We are proud to have been the second radiation therapy centre in Victoria to introduce RapidArc radiation therapy (also called volumetric modulated arc therapy - VMAT). This new technology produces superior dose distributions compared to both intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), and 3D conformal radiotherapy, which allows highly focussed treatment with minimal side effects.

Remote patients can take advantage of Centenary House (built in 2007 as a partnership between Rotary Australia and the State Government). This facility is highly subsidised accommodation for patients and their carers travelling in excess of 100km for treatment, and is located a short walk away.

For convenience, we have outreach clinics fortnightly in Sale, located at Central Gippsland Health Service, 155 Guthridge Parade Sale VIC 3850, and plan to commence a clinic in Warragul in the near future.
